Martin Gregory, degrowth? treasure hunter

MONTREAL – Martin Gregory goes through the garbage others pile at the curb in Mile End and the Plateau, Villeray and elsewhere in Montreal — and finds in it everything from gold jewelry and sterling silver flatware to working stereo components, musical instruments, paintings and collectibles, including a participation pin for the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics and a vintage aluminum Christmas tree. He keeps or gives away some of what he finds, and some he sells: The tree, for instance, fetched $100 on Craigslist, and he sold the pin on eBay for $70.

Gregory, 26, documents his finds, in words and in pictures he takes with a Canon point-and-shoot, on a thoughtful and at times philosophical blog called, appropriately, Things I Find in the Trash (garbagefinds.com). He has close to 600 followers.
