The degrowth movement is a relatively new contender in the economic and political debates that swirl around humanity’s future. Degrowthers believe we need a more modest and sane alternative to the constant pressures of expansion that are destroying the ecological basis of our existence. Author and essayist Richard Swift explores the degrowth alternative, in theory and in practice.

I listened to this podcast a couple of weeks ago and I was thrilled! Although I had heard the phrase “degrowth economics” a couple of times and was immediately attracted to it, I had no idea there was such an international network of people, working on these ideas both in theory and in practice, in some cases for 30 years. Thirty years ago was about the time I gave up on studying economics, having concluded it was all built on fantasy but not having any clear idea how a new foundation, built on reality, might be constructed. This podcast gave me a sense that it will be worthwhile to take up the subject again. Having followed some links from the CBC Ideas podcast entry, I now have an exciting new reading list.
